LANGKAWI ISLAND TOURS

                    

                     LANGKAWI EAGLE SQUARE TOUR

The Langkawi tour starts off with a visit to Underwater World – Malaysia’s largest aquarium – which features 200 different species of marine and freshwater creatures. The next stop on the itinerary is Langkawi’s most popular beach – Pantai Cenang. The sands are creamy white and the ocean waters warm and crystal clear; spend some time lounging on the sand and soaking up the sun and surf. Next, the tour heads on over to the Gamat Factory where you can purchase a wide variety of this traditional Malay medicine. Later the tour continues on towards Mahsuri’s Tomb; Mahsuri was a Malay princess who was accused of adultery and unjustly put to death. Her tomb stands as a commemoration of her innocence as well as in recognition of the curse she placed on Langkawi for seven generations. The last stop is Eagle Square; possibly the island’s most renowned and most visited attraction, the square is a beautiful collage of landscaped fountain structures as well as the colossal eagle statue.

Waterfalls

Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls is billed as the island’s most wonderful natural attraction. Set on Langkawi’s western headlands, its name means Seven Wells Waterfalls, referring to a series of seven connected natural pools fed by seven separate waterfalls in Mount Mat Cincang.

Managed by the Berjaya Leisure (part of the bigwig Berjaya Group), there is an ugly pipeline that runs next to the pools and the waterfall goes all the way to the Berjaya Langkawi Beach Resort. This development has resulted in reducing the water flow at the pools during the wet season to a reserved cascade and a trickle in dry season.

Locals say that the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls are home to fairies, but really it is probably the gorgeous flora in the area that makes the place seem magical. Plant life here includes unique lime plants and Sintuk, a climbing type of foliage, which grow abundantly.

Adventure enthusiasts can brave the steep climb to the top of the waterfalls, past huge rocks and through the seven pools: a journey that will take you approximately 45 minutes, along the way you are likely to spot macaques, hornbills and a positively giant squirrel or two along the way.

                 LANGKAWI LEGENDS & FOLKLORE

Langkawi’s legends are often spoken of to visitors; part of the allure of the island is the mystery and fantastic tales spun around different places. Ironically, it was these beliefs that seemed to have held back Langkawi’s economic growth for some time.

Today, the people have embraced development, becoming more advanced in both their infrastructure and mindset as a result. The ancient stories of Langkawi, however, have not ceased to exist. Instead, these legends have become part of the attraction to draw visitors to help shape Langkawi’s landscape through tourist revenue.

Living standards of local people have improved, and it is remarkable to note how much the island has changed by becoming a successful commercial centre.

Probably the most famous tale from Langkawi is that of a woman who was accused of adultery 200 years ago. She was tied to a tree and stabbed to death despite her pleas of innocence. The story goes on to say that she bled white blood, and proceeded to curse the island for seven generations. Back then, the people of Langkawi held on to this account of Mahsuri as the reason for Langkawi’s lack of growth.

Looking at Langkawi today, the ‘curse’ was clearly broken, since the island is now a fantastic hub of activity. Still, the legend of Mahsuri makes for great stories and a tomb claimed to be hers is located in Kuab, aptly named Makam Mahsuri.

Some landmarks in Langkawi are named directly or have some claim from a fable. For example, Kuah Town has its own story to tell; the explanation of why its name means gravy in Malay.

Then there are even horror stories of a mythical vampire creature that resides in a cave on the Dayang Bunting Island.

Barren women who bathe in the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls can become fertile, because of a fairy that used to frequent it.

Padang Matsirat is not only home to Langkawi’s airport but also known as the ‘field of burning rice’.

These stories provide a touch of flavour and colour to Langkawi’s culture and image as a premier tourist destination. Year after year, visitors from all around the world marvel at these tales while enjoying their sun-soaked holidays.

                  LANGKAWI DIVING & SNORKELING

Snorkeling and scuba diving are activities everybody, young or old, experienced or amateur, can do and enjoy. With minimum equipment and preparation requirements, snorkeling especially can be enjoyed as a family since all you need are fins and a mask to get a glimpse at the amazing undersea world. While it is possible to snorkel and scuba dive around the main island of Pulau Langkawi, these activities are best done at the reefs around the Pulau Payar Marine Park, 19 nautical miles off Langkawi Island. A fantastic place some consider on par with Tioman and Redang’s offerings, the simplicity of the setup and arrangement for snorkelling and diving activities here make it incredibly popular for amateur and advance enthusiasts.

Scuba diving is another activity that’s offered by the tour operators to Pulau Payar. Once you book a trip to the island, the operators will approach you on the ferry to see if you’re interested in scuba diving. The dive masters provide a one on one guide for those who decide to take up on the offer, so that those who have never dived before can do so.

The deeper waters where the operators bring you hold a richer variety of large fish. Guided by experienced divers, you’ll see schools of large fish including barracudas, cod and snappers which are absent from the shallow waters of the beach in Pulau Payar. After an hour or two in the deep water, the divers will head back to Pulau Payar for some fun and relaxation.

Skybridge

                       LANGKAWI SKYBRIDGE TOUR

The Langkawi Skybridge Tour takes you on a cable car ride to the top of Gunung Matchincang. As the gondola-style cab makes its way to the top you can get a bird’s eye view of legendary Langkawi as well as numerous outlying islands in the distance; Oriental Village, the home of the cable car, is a great place to visit. The mini town – situated at the base of the geo-park’s mountain range – has more than a few attractions; the tour continues on past Telaga Tujuh – also known as the Seven Wells waterfalls – before heading on over to the Taman Buaya Langkawi – the Langkawi Crocodile Farm – where you can watch keepers wrestling with these leathery beasts.

After that, soak up the sun at ‘Pantai Pasir Hitam’ – known asBlack Sand Beach; this shoreline is distinctive due to its almost opaque black sand. End your day with a relaxing visit to the Langkawi Wildlife Park set amidst a natural rainforest and featuring an exotic array of Langkawi’s furry and feathered friends.
